What is Piano Preparation, and Why Does It Matter?

A piano may be new, beautifully made, and safely delivered to a showroom, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ready to sound and respond at its best. That’s where piano preparation comes in. It’s the process of evaluating an instrument and completing the work it needs before it reaches its new owner. Depending on the piano, that may include inspection, tuning, regulation, voicing, cleaning, cosmetic care, and other adjustments.

New vs. Used Acoustic Pianos: Which Should You Buy?

Once you decide that an acoustic piano is right for your home, the next question is often whether to buy new or used. Both can be excellent choices. In the end, I was so impressed that I purchased two pianos: the restored Steinway Model M, my dream acoustic instrument, and a Yamaha Clavinova 845, an incredible digital piano with wooden keys that feels astonishingly close to a real Yamaha grand — perfect for silent practice late at night.
